I’m not a particularly neat and tidy person, but I can definitely see the beauty in a formal water feature. Like formal garden design itself, a formal fountain is symmetrical, balanced and sophisticated.

On Tuesday Jessy wrote about how to create a successful side garden with a Mediterranean flair. I’ve come across some perfect accents for a Mediterranean side garden and thought I’d share them here.
Ah, the elusive side garden: an outdoor space that’s often misunderstood, under-utilized and just plain forgotten.

Side gardens are small, narrow and are either really shady or really sunny — factors that usually puzzle homeowners and gardeners alike.
With all the dreary weather we’ve been having in the Bay Area lately, this “Fire Column” sounded particularly appealing to me.

Designed by Real Flame Gel Fireplaces, the Modesto Fire Column serves as both a stylish heat-producer and as a focal point in your garden
Last week we went to the Las Vegas Market Home + Gift Show and saw way too many cool garden accessories and outdoor furniture pieces. After viewing tons of new products, some trends became very apparent. Here are some outdoor trends we noticed, sure to be popular this year:
Reclaimed wood

- Made with reclaimed wood from India. Table by Mountain House.
Reclaimed wood is HUGE this year. Lots of producers and wholesalers – whether their style is “shabby chic” or uber modern – are incorporating reclaimed wood into their pieces.

I love Valentine’s Day. Even though it’s a total Hallmark holiday, it reminds you to be nice to your sweetie and to celebrate the love you have. The thing I don’t like about it is having to go to restaurants where they make you eat a set menu that you don’t want, charge you an exorbitantly high price, and then move you along quickly so they can get in the next seating.
I absolutely love my pick this week! As some of you may know, I was at the Las Vegas Market Home + Gift Show last week, and one of my favorite items I saw were these brightly colored Bamboo Chairs by Mountain House Furniture.

I get this question all the time: When should I plant my new garden?
Well, the best time to plant is Autumn, but since that already passed, your second best bet is mid-Spring.
Even though it seems like Spring has sprung in some cities already, you’ll want to wait until the last danger of frost has passed to begin planting.
I’m always disappointed when a home’s gardens are beautiful in the front and back of the house, but the side yard remains un-loved.

Don’t you just want to hang out and relax in the side garden below? With its curving pathway and overflowing flora, this garden is the perfect example of how you can create an amazing garden space in a narrow area.
